Floorpi has several computers for hall use. They're not great - as you know, you go to war with the machines you have. They're not the machines you might want or wish to have at a later time.

Simpi

Simpi is the Linux-Athena workstation in kitchen lounge. It does everything a cluster machine can (and accepts remote logins from people on the list - ask Meeg), but much more slowly. Don't run Matlab projects, compile kernels, or fold proteins on Simpi - any vaguely memory-intensive application will send it into swap, and it might never come back. Simpi has so far resisted all attempts to have it replaced with a superior computer.

Don't unplug the Ethernet. Only bad boys unplug the Ethernet. Along similar lines, don't unplug the power - the power cable is loose and easily unplugs from the power supply.

What it has:

  • Ease of access
  • Network
  • People logged in remotely who will be unhappy when you unplug it

What it doesn't have:

  • Cycles
  • Memory

Spartan

Simpi's neglected sibling. Remote logins only. Hardware is roughly on par with Simpi. Ethernet gets unplugged.

What it has:

What it doesn't have:

  • Local users eating memory
  • Advantages over [linerva.mit.edu linerva] or Athena dialups
  • Uptime

Wood-covered box

Possible replacement for Simpi. Awilcox is responsible.

What it has:

  • Woodgrain
  • 3 CD-ROM drives
  • 3 hard drives

What it doesn't have:

  • Functionality
  • Ventilation (thanks, woodgrain!)
