Computers

Floorpi has several computers for hall use. They're not great - as you know, you go to war with the machines you have. They're not the machines you might want or wish to have at a later time.

If you want to play music or use sshfs on a Debian-Athena system, you need to have the right user permissions - ask Meeg or Mikemp.

See Hall computer how-to for usage.

Simpi

Simpi is the Debathena workstation in kitchen lounge. It does everything a cluster machine can (and accepts remote logins from floorpi residents), but much more slowly. Don't run Matlab projects, compile kernels, or fold proteins on Simpi - any vaguely memory-intensive application will send it into swap, and it might never come back. Simpi has so far resisted all attempts to have it replaced with a superior computer.

Don't unplug the Ethernet. Only bad boys unplug the Ethernet. Along similar lines, don't unplug the power - the power cable is loose and easily unplugs from the power supply.

What it has:

  • Ease of access
  • Network
  • People logged in remotely who will be unhappy when you unplug it

What it doesn't have:

  • Cycles
  • Memory

Piwest

Piwest is a Debian-Athena server in TV lounge, in the AV stack. It has a nice sound card, which is connected to the hall audio system.

Flours

Flours is a Windows machine connected to Algernon.

floorpi.xvm

Floorpi.xvm is a virtualized server used for managing the hall music collection. You can get your own music added to the collection; this is the easiest way to get your music on the hall music system. Ask meeg for help.

Corpses

There are some computers and monitors in kitchen lounge. Most are hall property and not really much use, so if you want one, ask and ye shall probably receive.

Network

TV lounge wireless signal is not great, and there is only one Ethernet drop. For your every need and desire:

Wired switch

We have a shiny gigabit switch. Do not unplug any of the network cables. Do not steal any cables. Do not unplug the power.

If you connect your computer to the switch, it should behave like any other MITnet network drop, except that you will get above-MITnet transfer rates to anything else connected to the switch.

Wireless router

We have a crappy wireless router. Again, do not unplug anything.

The network SSID is piwestpoint.

Because this is a router (not switch), any traffic going through the router is associated with the hall (not you). Don't pirate stuff through it.

Wireless is normally turned off; ask meeg to turn it on.

Mailing lists

  • floorpi: Main hall mailing list. Everybody should be on it; if not, ask someone who is.
  • vagina-face: Summer mailing list. Add yourself if you want in.
  • thirdwest-request: Not used as a mailing list per se (except for spam). Controls access to the thirdwest locker (below). Ask a member to add you.

Web space

We have an Athena locker, thirdwest. Access is controlled by membership of the thirdwest-request list (above). Currently the locker contains two web sites and a Starcraft install.

Wiki

The thing you're reading.

Web page

Our old static page. The wiki has replaced it, but the old stuff is still around (the index page redirects to the wiki): http://web.mit.edu/thirdwest/www

Starcraft

You need to be on the garmbrood list to use this. Ask mikemp or charlest.

Host registrations

Floorpi has several static IPs for hall use. If you need to know what they are, you probably know how to find them.
