Before the game, each player chooses one of the eleven roles described below. Then the players discuss, and eventually vote to either lynch or no lynch. The game then ends and each player either wins or loses depending on the identities of the other players.

Voting Rules:

If there are n players alive, it takes floor(n/2) players to lynch and floor(n/2) + 1 players to no lynch. A no lynch also occurs if there are no players alive. In order to propose a lynch, point at a player, or point upwards to suggest a no lynch. If sufficiently many players are pointing for a lynch or no lynch to succeed, then all players pointing may say "3, 2, 1, lynch" or "3, 2, 1, no lynch" as appropriate. Pigs replace all syllables with "oink". Players who either do not wish to lynch or who are unable to may instead say "3, 2, 1, *silence*" and this does not count as a vote. Players who aren't allowed to vote to lynch may vote to no lynch, and any player can point and say the "3, 2, 1" part. If the counting down is interrupted by an investigation, a trapper trapping, or a child revealing, then that resolves first and the counting down must restart. A single person cannot make such an interruption of the same vote with the same investigation twice (no filibustering!).

Town-Aligned Roles:

  • Town (does nothing)
  • Batman (see town win condition)
  • Child (May at any time declare "I'm a child and I trust you". Only children are allowed to say this and then mafia may say "I slaughter you" to immediately win the game (and town loses))
  • Pig (Dies if they say any word other than "oink". If they need to say a game-action, replace every syllable with "oink")
  • Investigator (See investigation rules)

Town-Aligned Roles win if and only if one of the following occur:

  • A mafia player is lynched.
  • A no lynch happens and there are exactly as many batmen as mafia alive, or no mafia and one batman.
  • The number of mafia minus the number of batmen alive at the end of the game is at least max(ceil(n/2),2), where n is the number of players alive at the end of the game.

Note that "mafia" refers to the players who chose the role "mafia" or "bear".

Other roles:

  • Lover (Before game start choose a player to love. Wins if and only if this player wins)
  • Nemesis (Before game start choose a player to hate. Wins if and only if this player loses. May not vote for the player they hate)
  • Trapper (May at any point declare "I trap you as --role--" and point at a player. The trapper dies, and wins if and only if the trapped player was the role the trapper claimed. The trapped player dies as well if the trapper was correct)
  • Jester (Wins if they are lynched, or if they participate in the lynch of a mafia)
  • Mafia (Wins if town does not win. May not vote to lynch)
  • Bear (Wins if town does not win. May not vote to lynch. Dies if they say any word other than "gao". If they need to say a game-action, replace every syllable with "gao".)

Investigation Rules:

At any time, any player may declare: "I'm an investigator, what's your role" pointing at a specific player. This player has three options:

  • Respond truthfully
  • Lie or don't respond, but as a consequence may no longer vote to lynch
  • Challenge the investigation, by saying "You're not an investigator". If the player was not an investigator, they die, otherwise the challenger dies.

Miscellaneous Rules:

  • If there is a directed cycle of lovers and nemeses, then all players in the cycle lose.
  • If the game has been dragging on for far too long, then a live player can put a one-minute timer on it. If nobody has died at the end of this minute then the game ends in a no lynch.
  • To join the game, raise your hand and say "I have a role". You should only do this if you have a role.
  • Pigs (and anyone pretending to be a pig) should instead raise their hand and say "oink". Similarly, bears should say "gao".
  • Dead players are cats and may only say "meow".
  • It should be secret who can vote to lynch and who cannot vote to lynch. In games with more than three players, it is therefore considered Rude to force one player to vote to lynch somebody while you say just "3, 2, 1...". If it happens organically that one player votes to lynch and others do not, then that's okay.
