Policies described below are NOT final and will need further review and hall approval.

Room Wars

Room Wars is how we determine housing among residents. Room Wars is typically held at the end of the spring term to choose rooms for the entire next year.

If someone transfers off-hall in the middle of the year i.e. after fall semester, a smaller Room Wars is held before spring term. This Room Wars is opt-in through email though everyone who decides to participate gives up rights to their current room. Others who do not contact the Hall Chairs wanting to participate are assumed to be keeping their current room. However, rooming assignments decided then can be changed again at at the end of the year.

Rules

  • all residents except freshmen are given the option to "squat" or keep their current room
    • freshmen must enter Room Wars
    • residents can decide to squat up until the Friday before the Sunday meeting
      • whoever decides to not squat and enter Room Wars gives up all rights to their current room
  • once residents enter Room Wars they are placed in tiers and within tiers ranking is decided by dice roll
    • tiers are determined in order by time on hall, time at MIT, and then for freshmen whether they lived in a single or double
  • those participating in Room Wars should come prepared with several choices of rooms
    • no resident can change their room choice after the next person has chosen a room

Kitchen

The kitchen is there for hall usage. All residents are free to use the cabinet/drawer space, appliances, and fridge space provided they follow some simple rules.

More info is available at KitchenComm.

General Upkeep Rules

  • if you use the kitchen in any way, you must make sure you clean up after yourself and leave all space/appliances/utensils in good condition
    • please be sure to wash your dishes, clean appliances, and run the garbage disposal after you cook

Storage Space Rules

  • cabinets/drawers in the kitchen are divided among residents at beginning of year
    • each resident must claim space and then register with KitchenComm
    • all spaces are free game if they are empty/unlabeled
      • max space allowed for sophomores and below is one single-door cabinet or equivalent
      • max space allowed for juniors and above is one double-door cabinet or equivalent
  • everyone who claims a cabinet MUST sign up to clean for a five-day shift on the rotation calendar
    • during your shift, you are responsible for making sure the sinks are clear of dirty dishes and no mess is left on the stoves or counters
    • sign-ups for cleaning are done with KitchenComm
      • a calendar of sign-ups will be posted on the KitchenComm page
    • all five-day shifts are shared by two residents with equal responsibility
    • if for some reason you are unable to do your shift you must contact KitchenComm for reassignment
      • it is possible to switch with another resident provided they tell KitchenComm that they agree to the switch
    • failure to perform your duties during your shift will be punished accordingly
      • first time is a warning sent through email and verbally
      • second time your cabinet is emptied and label is removed, meaning the space is free to be claimed and your items are left out for use unless you claim them

Fridge Space Rules

  • you may store food in the fridge provided that your food is LABELED and thrown out when it is expired
    • all unlabeled food is free for hall consumption
  • fridges will be cleaned occasionally
    • at this time, all food must be labeled with a name AND with the word "KEEP"
    • food that is clearly expired will be thrown out regardless for the sake of hall health

Murals

EC is known for its creative and sometimes surprising murals. Floor Pi greatly benefits from murals that are painted in public space such as in the bathrooms or in the hallway.

All residents can have the chance to leave a mark on hall as long as they follow the mural policy.

Rules

  • space that is open for mural painting is posted on the mural proposal page, please consider painting on blank wall before you decide to paint over any murals
  • mural proposals should be posted on the wiki page
    • in addition, notice must be given to hall by email and optionally by a posted sign on the space to be painted
  • hall approves by default 72 hours after notice is sent unless there are enough objections
    • at least four objections must be made to cancel a mural
      • if you are making an objection, please reply to the sponsor and hall with your objection and the reason behind it
    • sponsor may begin painting after 72 hours if hall approves
  • murals may be painted using hall painting supplies
    • all hall painting supplies must be returned in good condition or face punishment by NiceThingsComm
  • link to NiceThingsComm

Elections

Our hall is run by elected officers who are nominated and voted for by residents. Consider getting involved with hall organization and fun events in the future!

Elections are held through hall meetings and by email votes.

Chair Elections Rules

  • Hall Chairs and Rush Chairs are elected at the end of spring term each year
    • chair candidates must be nominated by the Friday before the Sunday meeting
      • residents may nominate others or themselves
      • nominations must be sent to all of hall by email
      • person nominated must decline or accept through an email to hall
    • all chair candidates are interviewed by hall members during the meeting
    • votes are then emailed to GRT by the following Wednesday
      • each resident can vote for two Hall Chair candidates and two Rush Chair candidates
      • majority vote is needed to win and elected chairs are announced by GRT

Comm Elections Rules

  • Comms are elected at the beginning of the fall term
    • comm candidates are nominated at the election meeting
      • residents may nominate others or themselves
      • each person nominated must decline or accept at this point
    • candidates will be asked to give a spiel on what they plan to do if elected, then briefly questioned
    • candidates will be sent from room for a brief vote by hands
      • majority wins, winners are effectively on comms immediately

Reimbursement

Hall money is not immediately spent on purchases that are made for hall events or by comms. Instead, hall residents must buy using their own money and then receive hall money as a reimbursement.

Guidelines

  • keep all receipts from your purchases
    • for purchases outside of hall coverage, use Star Market receipts for equal amount
    • give the receipts to Hall Chairs or related comm
    • pick up check from SAO office in student center, 5th floor
      • if necessary, checks can also be mailed to you

Discretion

EC is a very special place. Likewise, Floor Pi is a special place. In return for several awesome undergrad years, we ask that you use your head and don't get your fellow hall members into unnecessary trouble.

Guidelines

  • think before you open your mouth and consider who you are talking to
  • never leave a "paper trail" and know how to keep a secret
    • watch who you are replying to in emails, for the love of god
  • just think of it this way; what happens on Floor Pi, stays on Floor Pi
