Room Wars

Preference will be decided by class, then by time on hall, and then by random number table, though freshmen in doubles will get preference over freshmen in singles.

  • preference by time at MIT, time on hall, single or double
  • if time on hall exceeds time at MIT by 2 terms, preference given
  • otherwise decided by dice roll
    • roll to break ties, decide rank within a tier
  • come prepared with choice of room
    • cannot change room after the next person has chosen a room

Kitchen

  • cabinets/drawers doled out at beginning of year
  • must claim space and then register with kitchencomm
    • all spaces are free game if they are empty of stuff/unlabeled
    • max space allowed for sophomores and below is one large cabinet or equivalent
    • max space allowed for juniors and above is two large cabinets or equivalent
  • everyone who claims a cabinet MUST sign up to clean for five days
    • sign-ups for cleaning are done with kitchencomm
    • calendar of sign-ups will be posted on the kitchencomm page
    • all five-day shifts are shared by two residents
    • if for some reason you are unable to do your shift you must contact kitchencomm for reassignment
      • it is possible to switch with another resident provided they tell kitchencomm that it is okay
  • failure to perform your duties during your shift will be punished accordingly
    • first time is warning
    • second time your cabinet is emptied and label is removed, free game
  • more info is available at KitchenComm

Murals

A proposal should be emailed to the hall (& posted on location if possible) with a basic design and location. Important factors: background color, general content, size, etc.

Painting can start after 12 hours after that objections can be raised for another 2 days (60 hours after original proposal). If changes are made to the design/proposal all times restart, meaning: another 12 hours until painting and then 2 more for objections.

Threshold for objections is 10% (meaning essentially always 4 people). You should include some reason for your objection. Then if proposer can make changes and as stated above times restart.

If painting has started and then objections occur (to previously mentioned thresholds), then the painter has one week to paint it a solid neutral color (ex: white, off white, institute white, light colors...)

  • mural proposals should be posted on the wiki
    • in addition, notice must be given to hall by email and optionally by a posted sign on the space to be painted
  • hall approves by default 72 hours after notice is sent unless there are enough objections
    • at least four objections are needed to cancel a mural, please reply to sponsor and hall with objections
    • sponsor may begin painting at this time if hall approves
  • murals may be painted using hall painting supplies
    • all hall painting supplies must be returned in good condition or face punishment by nicethingscomm

Elections

  • hall chairs and rush chairs are elected at the end of spring term each year
    • chair candidates must be nominated by the Friday before the Sunday meeting
      • residents may nominate others or themselves
      • nominations must be sent to all of hall
      • person nominated must decline or accept through an email to hall
    • all chair candidates are interviewed by hall members during the meeting
    • votes are then emailed to GRT by the following Wednesday
      • each resident can vote for two hall chairs and two rush chairs
      • majority wins and winners are announced by GRT
  • comms are elected at the beginning of the fall term
    • comm candidates are nominated at the election meeting
      • residents may nominate others or themselves
      • each person nominated must decline or accept at this point
    • candidates will be asked to give a spiel on what they plan to do if elected, then briefly questioned
    • candidates will be sent from room for a brief vote by hands
      • majority wins, winners are effectively on comms immediately

Reimbursement

  • keep all receipts for your purchases
    • for purchases outside of hall coverage, use Star Market receipts for equal amount
    • give them to hall chairs or related comm
    • pick up check from SAO office in student center, 5th floor

Discretion

  • think before you open your mouth
  • never leave a paper trail
    • watch who you are replying to in emails, for the love of god
  • what happens on floor pi, stays on floor pi
